Service Knowledge Kit

Help an engineer new to one backend service understand its purpose, owner and dependencies, inspect the supporting sources and prepare to run it locally.

Designed for Tech Leads, Platform and DocOps owners preparing service documentation for their teams.

Current local workflow

Select permitted files for one service and task from a local checkout. The current workflow reads configured English Markdown sections, JSON values and Python source lines, with references to the exact source versions and locations.

SK runs locally with Python 3.12 and has been tested on macOS with Apple silicon. Its default workflow assembles a draft from selected evidence using a fixed template; it does not interpret an arbitrary codebase.

What it produces

  • A source inventory, knowledge records and task-specific context.
  • An onboarding draft with source excerpts and links.
  • Visible gaps, conflicting evidence and questions for a maintainer.
  • Documentation checks with findings and suggested next actions.

Review and update

A draft starts pending review. For one managed document, changed evidence produces a proposed update for explicit review and application. Human notes are preserved, and rollback restores the previous document. Source files remain unchanged.

Availability and boundaries

The local workflow is implemented in the development repository. A versioned self-serve release with installation instructions is still being prepared. There is no public download, approved price or support offer yet. Other Plain products are not prerequisites.

The default local workflow runs without a model or network requests. It does not execute source commands, search a whole company or accept uploads through this website. A model-assisted draft from Plain's own example files has also been tested locally. That output still requires review; model-assisted generation is not publicly available through this website.

Reference example

Text Metrics is a working local service whose documentation and source files are used to develop SK. It is separate from the kit. Local checks verify the supported workflow; customer outcomes and onboarding improvements have not been measured.
